This page helps users handle an unclaimed property need in California by explaining how to search for property, start a claim, check claim status, and follow official next steps.

California Unclaimed Property is handled through the Office of the State Controller Unclaimed Property Division, which provides the secure Claim Search Page and related claim tools.

California Claim Search Page

Use the official search for unclaimed property tool to look for lost funds or property held through California Unclaimed Property. The service is free and secure.

Have one of these details ready before searching:

  • Last or business name
  • Property ID, if you already have one
  • First name, city, or zip code to narrow results

After entering the search information, review exact name matches first, then check similar-name results if needed.

  • Enter a last name, business name, or Property ID.
  • Add a first name, city, or zip code to refine the search.
  • Select the “CLAIM” button next to any property that may belong to you.
  • Select “CONTINUE TO FILE CLAIM” to begin the claim process.

If you enter a Property ID, use only the Property ID field.

Claim status and Claim ID

After filing, use the check claim status tool to review a submitted claim. A Claim ID is required.

The Claim ID is found on the claim form and in the email notice received when the claim was initiated. It is a unique number assigned when an unclaimed property claim is filed.

Upload claim documents

For an existing claim, use the upload claim documentation page. Enter the Claim ID from the upper right corner of the claim form, along with the email address tied to the claim.

  • Files must be pdf, tif, png, or jpeg format.
  • Each file must be greater than 1 byte and less than 10 MB.
  • Files cannot be password protected.
  • File names may contain only letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores.
  • File names cannot exceed 100 characters.

Only five documents may be uploaded at a time. If more than five documents are needed, submit the first five and repeat the process until all files have been uploaded.

Documents uploaded to closed or incorrect claims will not be reviewed.

Processing rules and claim limits

There is no time limit to file a claim after unclaimed property has been transferred to the State Controller’s Office. The state maintains custody until the rightful owner or heirs come forward to claim it.

Unclaimed property generally includes inactive financial assets, such as bank accounts, unpaid wages, securities, life insurance payouts, uncashed checks, and safe deposit box proceeds. It does not include real estate or vehicles.

Unclaimed property law allows up to 180 days from the date a complete claim package is received to review the documentation and make a decision. Cash-only owner claims may be processed in as little as 30 to 60 days, while more complex claims may take up to 180 days.

Deceased owners, multiple owners, and special claims

An heir, trustee, personal representative, executor, or administrator may file a claim for property belonging to a deceased owner. Additional forms are available for deceased owner claims, including a Declaration Under Probate Code 13101 and a Table of Heirship.

For jointly owned property, include information and supporting documents that show how the property is owned. If there are multiple owners, each owner must either sign the claim form or file a separate claim form for their share.

Power of Attorney cannot generally replace a claimant’s signature on the claim form or investigator agreement. Exceptions may be considered when a medical condition prevents the claimant from signing and medical verification is provided.

Fraud alerts and investigator fees

The State Controller’s Office cautions the public about generic postcards, official-looking emails, and letters from non-governmental sources asking people to call unknown numbers, contact private attorneys, or pay upfront fees.

You may claim property yourself through the State Controller’s unclaimed property website without fees or lawyers. Investigators, also called asset locators or heir finders, are independent third parties and may not charge more than 10% of the value of property returned to you.

If you receive a suspicious solicitation from a non-governmental source, do not share personal information with the sender. Forward it to CSUResearch@sco.ca.gov so the Controller’s legal team can review it.
