This guide helps users handle an unclaimed property need in Delaware, including how to search, start a claim, check an existing claim, and upload claim documents.

The main public channel is the Delaware Department of Finance Office of Unclaimed Property, which provides online claim search, claim status, and document upload tools for claimants.

Delaware claim search page

Use the Delaware search for unclaimed property tool to look for property reported to the state. You can search by an individual name or business name, and you may narrow results with a city or Property ID.

  • Name or business name
  • City, if you need to narrow the results
  • Property ID, if you already have one

After results appear, select the properties you want to claim before continuing.

  • Enter the owner name or business name in the search field.
  • Add a city or Property ID if the result list is too broad.
  • Select each property you want to claim under the action area.
  • Choose “Continue To File Claim” to begin the claim process.

Important: Delaware provides a claim number only after the online claim initiation process is completed.

Claim status and claim ID lookup

Use the check claim status page when you already started a Delaware unclaimed property claim. The search requires the Claim ID issued when the claim was initiated.

The Claim ID can also be found on the claim receipt sent to the email address provided during the claim process. If the Claim ID has been lost or cannot be accessed, contact the Office of Unclaimed Property.

Requests for check reissuance or payment corrections must be submitted in writing to escheat.claimquestions@delaware.gov or by faxing a signed written request to (302) 622-4115. The request must reference the Claim ID and must come from the rightful owner or an authorized claimant.

Claim document upload requirements

Use the Delaware upload claim documents page after reviewing the “Documentation Required” area of your claim form. The upload form requires your Claim ID and email address.

  • Accepted file types are standard PDF, TIF, PNG, or JPG.
  • Each file must be larger than 1 byte and no more than 10MB.
  • File names must be 100 characters or fewer and may contain only letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores.
  • Documents must not be password protected.
  • Images should be legible, high resolution, in color, and cropped to the document.

Enter the six-digit Claim ID, re-enter the Claim ID, enter the email address, and re-enter the email address before adding documents. Uploading documents without proper identifying information can delay the claim process.

When a name search does not find the property

If you cannot locate your name, or if you are searching for a gift card, gift certificate, bond, or money order, Delaware directs users to the Online Request Form for an internal database search by Office of Unclaimed Property staff.

The request form asks for identifying information such as the name being searched, date of birth, SSN or Tax ID, and previous address. Use this route when the standard claim search does not match what you expected.

Money Match checks

Delaware’s Money Match program automatically returns certain unclaimed property to Delaware taxpayers without requiring a claim or document submission. The program compares the state’s unclaimed property database with verified address information from the taxpayer’s most recent Delaware state income tax filing.

If the property qualifies, the Delaware Office of Unclaimed Property mails a check to the taxpayer’s address. Users are still encouraged to search for additional unclaimed property because not every property qualifies for Money Match.

Money Match checks are unclaimed property funds and are not federal or state stimulus payments.

Property types and limits

Delaware unclaimed property includes intangible property such as checking and savings accounts, uncashed wage and payroll checks, stock dividends, stock certificates, insurance payments, utility deposits, customer deposits, credit balances, refund checks, money orders, traveler’s checks, court deposits, unused gift cards, life insurance proceeds, and virtual currency.

Unclaimed property does not include real estate or vehicles. For excess proceeds from a Delaware sheriff’s sale of real property, the separate Project Rightful Owner process is handled by the Delaware Superior Court.

The State of Delaware maintains custody of reported unclaimed property until the rightful owner, heir, estate, or authorized claimant comes forward.
