Property Tax - Walton search and payment

Use the county tax payment portal to view and pay a current-year property tax bill. The service asks for bill details before showing the account.

  • Tax type
  • Alternate Key
  • Combined tax and assessment
  • Property tax account number from the tax bill

Once you have the account information ready, follow the portal flow for the current tax year.

For more than 10 accounts, the portal notes that logged-in users may use the bulk add feature to upload a list of up to 500 accounts.

Other ways to search a Walton County tax bill

The Walton County Tax Collector explains that a tax bill can also be searched by account number, owner name, or mailing address. The account number is located at the top right corner of the tax bill.

When searching by owner name, the spelling must match the Property Appraiser database for that parcel or account. If the full spelling is uncertain, a last name and first initial may help narrow the search.

Mailing address searches require the street number, street name, and direction. The address search is limited to Walton County mailing addresses, and P.O. Boxes are not searchable. For parcel address searching, use the Property Appraiser website to identify the parcel number, then use that number to access the tax bill through the tax site.

Real estate taxes and the Tax Collector role

The Walton County Tax Collector collects property taxes. The office does not set the assessed value, exemptions, or millage rates.

The Property Appraiser’s Office assesses property value as of January 1, sends TRIM notices in August, and certifies the real estate and tangible personal property tax rolls. After bills are printed, changes to assessed value, name, address, or tax roll details must be handled through the Property Appraiser’s Office.

For homestead exemption questions, the Tax Collector FAQ directs users to the Walton County Property Appraiser’s Office at (850) 892-8123.

Installment payment plan

Taxpayers may choose a quarterly installment plan when the prior year’s taxes exceed $100.00 and the account is not escrowed by a mortgage company. Applications must be submitted by April 30.

To apply, search the tax roll for the account and use the “Apply for Tax Year Installment Plan” button. The application requires email confirmation to complete registration.

Installment Due date and discount
First installment Due by June 30; based on 1/4 of the previous year’s taxes with a 6% discount
Second installment Due by September 30; based on 1/4 of the previous year’s taxes with a 4.5% discount
Third installment Due by December 31; based on 1/2 of the remaining current-year liability with a 3% discount
Fourth installment Due by March 31; no discount

If the first installment is not paid by June 30, participation ends for the rest of the year.

Delinquent real estate taxes

Real estate taxes become delinquent on April 1. Delinquent taxes must be paid by cash, cashier’s check, money order, or debit or credit card with a convenience fee. The amount due is based on the date payment is received in the office.

Delinquent real estate parcels are advertised in the DeFuniak Herald once a week for three consecutive weeks before the tax certificate sale. Advertising and auction costs are added to the delinquent bill.

Tax certificate sales begin on or before June 1. Certificates are liens on unpaid real estate taxes, not sales of land. Bidding starts at 18% interest and moves downward, and certificates are awarded to the lowest bidder.

Tangible personal property taxes

Tangible personal property tax applies to business furniture and equipment, mobile home attachments, and furnishings provided in rental property. After assessment and millage rates are set, the tangible tax roll is certified and delivered to the Tax Collector for collection.

Taxes become delinquent on April 1, and a 1.5 percent fee per month is added to the bill. Within 45 days after delinquency, the Tax Collector advertises delinquent tangible personal property taxpayers one time in a local newspaper, with advertising costs added to the bill.

Business closings should be reported to the Property Appraiser’s Office. If a business was open at any time during the year, taxes are due for that year.

Property tax address changes and public records requests

Permanent address changes to the tax roll must be completed through the Property Appraiser’s Office because that office is the official record keeper of the tax roll.

For a public record request involving the Walton County Tax Collector, email prrequest@waltontaxcollectorfl.gov. The office states that it will respond with the cost associated with the records request.
