Look Up an Indiana Professional License

This page helps users handle a professional license need in Indiana by explaining the main search and verification options available through official state services.

The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency and the PLA Free Search & Verify service are the main routes for checking license status, ordering official verification, and reviewing related licensing services.

PLA Free Search & Verify

Use the Indiana PLA search and verify a professional license tool to look up Indiana professional license holders. The service lets you search with partial information, and the search page notes that less information can be more effective.

Helpful search fields include:

• Profession
• First or middle name
• Last name
• License number
• City, county, state, or ZIP code
• License status
• Doing business as

If you are unsure of the exact name, use a wildcard by placing an asterisk after the partial entry, such as “Al*”.

• Open the PLA verification search page.
• Enter the information you know in one or more search fields.
• Use fewer fields if the first search does not return the expected result.
• Select the matching record to review the available license information.

The same search page includes an option to search for a facility instead of a person.

Search, verify, and print options

Indiana also offers a paid Search, Verify, & Print option for users who need additional information in a printable format. The PLA online services page lists the cost as $1.43 by credit card or $1.00 with a subscriber account.

The paid search page supports several search paths:

• License number
• Full name for individual certification
• Facility name for a facility or business entity certification

Use the paid printable option when a basic free lookup is not enough for your purpose.

PLA digital certification

For proof of Indiana licensure when applying to another state, use PLA Digital Certification. This service provides a digitally certified verification in PDF format. The total fee is $10.60.

PLA states that it does not mail or email verifications on behalf of the licensee. After payment, the user downloads the certified PDF and sends it directly to the licensing board that needs it.

To order a certification, use PLA Digital Certification and follow the payment and download prompts. Laptop or desktop computers are recommended because the file must download properly.

Do not close the payment or download page too soon. The certification must be downloaded during the session, and changes to the PDF can invalidate the certification.

Digital certification limits and exceptions

The Online Verification Service is the only way to obtain official verification of Indiana licensure. Verification requests and payments received in office are returned to the sender.

Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses must use NURSYS for verification purposes. Veterinarian licenses and Registered Veterinary Technicians are governed by the Board of Animal Health effective July 1, 2023.

Recipients can check whether a downloaded digitally certified PDF is authentic by using the state authenticity verification process or by reviewing the “Certified by State of Indiana” blue ribbon in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Discipline search and license litigation

The PLA Discipline Search covers actions taken by Indiana professional licensing boards, commissions, and committees. It includes health-related and professional license categories.

The basic discipline search shows actions from the previous 90 days. To search older actions or use details such as name or license number, use the Advanced Search option.

Disciplinary action information is refreshed weekly. Orders are posted on the agency’s Discipline Search site, and some actions may not become effective until a written order is issued, signed, file stamped, and served or otherwise known by the respondent.

LicenseWatch and data downloads

LicenseWatch allows entities to track license updates and notices of proceedings for occupational professionals licensed in Indiana. Users can track events such as expired licenses, renewals, expirations, and changes in license status.

The PLA also offers downloadable license files through the IN.gov portal. The data download can include public fields such as name, license number, address, issue date, expiration date, and license status. Confidential information such as Social Security numbers and exam results is not provided.

Data download fees are $150 for the first record and $10 for each additional 1,000 records. The database is updated in real time.

Verification API

The PLA Verification API is available for businesses, organizations, and individuals that need to verify professional credentials or facilities. The API can return information such as name, profession, license type, license status, issuance date, and expiration date.

The Verification API does not provide proof of licensure for another state. For that purpose, use the PLA Digital Certification service.
