This page helps users handle a permit search in Montgomery County, Maryland, by explaining how to check a permit status, search by address, and follow up through county permitting services.
Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services provides the main online tools for permit status searches, address-based data searches, inspections, and records requests.
Online Services - Check Permit Status
Use the Department of Permitting Services Check Permit Status tool when you already have the application type and permit or license number. The search displays details such as site address, work type, application date, review status, and inspection status when available.
- Application Type
- Permit or License Number
After you have those details ready, use the permit status search to locate the application record.
- Open the check permit status search.
- Select the application type from the dropdown menu.
- Enter the permit or license number.
- Click the search button and review the Details tab.
Results may be grouped under sections such as Application, Contractors, Licenses, Reviews, and Inspections. Use the horizontal section bars to show or hide sections, and use column headers in review or inspection lists to sort results.
Data Search by property address
If you do not know the permit number, use the Department of Permitting Services Data Search to look up permit applications by property address.
- Street No
- Street Name
- Direction, suffix, city, and ZIP when available
The address search returns matching addresses from the DPS Permit System. Select the matching address to view applications and permits for that property.

- Enter the street number and street name.
- Add optional address details if they help narrow the search.
- Choose the matching address from the results.
- Review the applications and permits listed for that address.
Tip: Street number and street name are required for the address search.
Permit details, reviews, and inspections
Permit search results can include application information along with review and inspection status. Review and inspection listings may also be sortable by column header.
For inspection scheduling, DPS provides online inspection requests for applicable permits. If you have trouble scheduling next-day commercial inspections before 12:00 PM, contact the Montgomery County Service Center at (240) 777-0311 and ask to speak with a DPS Permit Technician.
Records requests and account access
Some permit-related needs may require a records request instead of a basic status search. The Department of Permitting Services lists Request Records as an online service and accepts Maryland Public Information Act requests for DPS records.
DPSeServices account users must provide a valid email address to log in. The system sends electronic communications to the user’s email address and automatically logs users off after more than 60 minutes of idle time.
Account note: For sign-in problems, call (240) 777-0311 for help.
