This page helps you check, pay, and track Property Tax in Smith County, Texas using the Smith County Tax Office and related official services. It points you to the main online tax search, payment choices, deadlines, and the office that handles appraisal questions.

This site is independent and provides no legal, tax, or financial advice or guarantees. Use official county resources for account details, payment status, and office assistance.

The main self-service starting point is the county tax search. Use it to look up an account, review paid or unpaid status, and move into online payment when needed.

  • Account Number
  • Owner Name
  • Owner Address
  • Property Location

For address searches, enter the street number and street name only. Do not add street type or direction such as Ave., Ln., or Dr.

  • Open the search and pay page.
  • Choose whether to include inactive accounts and whether to view paid, unpaid, or both.
  • Search by account number, owner name, owner mailing address, or property location.
  • Review the account shown and confirm the details before submitting any payment.

Helpful tip: If you do not know the account number, search by owner name, owner address, or property location instead.

Payment methods and processing

Property taxes can be paid in person, online, by mail, or by drop box through the Smith County Tax Office. Online payments accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.

Credit card payments carry a 2.50% convenience fee with a $2 minimum. Debit card payments carry a 1.5% convenience fee with a $2 minimum. Electronic checks do not have a fee, and the county says to allow at least 3 days for funds to process from your account.

If you want an estimate before paying, you can use the Property Tax Estimator. For proposed rates, hearing dates, and budget-related tax information, use Truth in Taxes.

Appraisals, exemptions, and ownership questions

The Smith County Tax Office does not handle property value appraisals. For appraised value notices, protests, ownership updates after a deed is filed, exemption forms, legal descriptions, and property value questions, contact Smith County Appraisal District.

You can use Smith CAD for appraisal district services, including property search, tax information, exemption materials, and the online protest system. The county also notes that you should not be asked to pay to view your property records.

If your tax bill shows the wrong owner or mailing address, or if you recently bought or sold property and the ownership record has not been updated yet, the next step is to work with Smith County Appraisal District rather than the Tax Office.

Deadlines, penalties, and delinquent taxes

Tax collection starts around October 1 as bills go out, and taxes are due when you receive the bill. The deadline for paying the current year’s tax is January 31 of the following year.

Current taxes become delinquent on February 1. Penalty and interest then begin to accrue. The schedule listed by the county is 7% in February, 9% in March, 11% in April, 13% in May, 15% in June, 18% plus a 15% additional collection fee in July, 19% plus that fee in August, and 20% plus that fee in September. Interest continues to add 1% each month until the taxes are paid in full.

Taxes not paid in full by June 30 are referred for enforced collection. For most Smith County jurisdictions, the delinquent tax attorney is Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson, LLP. For Tyler Independent School District, the delinquent tax attorney is Perdue, Brandon, Fielder, Collins, and Mott.

Common questions

How do I look up a Smith County property tax account online?

Use the county’s online tax search to look up an account by account number, owner name, owner address, or property location. The search also lets you view paid or unpaid status. Start with the county’s official search and pay tool, then confirm the account details before paying.

What if I never received my tax statement?

Call the Smith County Tax Office during regular business hours at (903) 590-2920 and request that a statement be mailed to you, or visit the main office at 1517 West Front Street in Tyler. The county also says you can download a copy of your tax statement online. Do not wait for a paper bill if a payment deadline is close.

Who handles property value protests and exemption forms?

Those issues go through Smith County Appraisal District, not the Smith County Tax Office. Contact SCAD at (903) 510-8600 for appraised value questions, exemptions, legal descriptions, and ownership corrections. That is also the office to contact if a recently filed deed has not yet updated the ownership record.

When do penalties and interest start on unpaid property taxes?

Penalty and interest start on February 1 if current taxes remain unpaid. The county lists increasing penalty and interest amounts by month, and an added 15% collection fee begins in July. If your account is already delinquent, address it as early as possible before additional charges continue to build.

Can I estimate taxes or review proposed tax rates before I pay?

Yes. The county provides a Property Tax Estimator for tax estimates and a Truth in Taxes site for proposed rates, hearing dates, and budget information. Use those official tools when you need planning details rather than a payment lookup.
