This page helps you search for Unclaimed Property in Texas, review possible matches, and move into the state claim process. It focuses on the official ClaimItTexas system run by the Texas Comptroller.

You can also use the same official system to check claim status, upload documents, and find contact details if you need help. Use the state’s own pages for your search and claim records.

Claim Search Page

Start with the official search for unclaimed property page. Have the owner name ready before you search.

  • Last or Business Name
  • First Name
  • City, if you need to narrow results
  • Property ID, if you received an owner notice in the mail

If your first search does not find the property you expected, try a nickname, a common misspelling, a maiden name, or a different name the property may have been reported under.

  • Enter the name fields and click SEARCH.
  • Review the results, which show exact name matches first and then similar-name results.
  • Click the CLAIM button next to each property you want to include.
  • Select CONTINUE TO FILE CLAIM.
  • Choose your relationship to each property and click File Claim.
  • Enter claimant information and click Next to submit the claim.

Security note: the state says the site uses a secure certificate and keeps claim details available only to Unclaimed Property officials for claims processing and holder reporting purposes.

Check claim status

After you file, use the claim status search page with your Claim ID. The Claim ID is also listed on the claim receipt sent to the email address you provided.

The state notes that processing may take longer than usual when claim volume is high. Claims may also be delayed if all requested documents were not uploaded.

If you lost your Claim ID, contact the Unclaimed Property Division before trying to search again.

Upload claim documents

Use the document upload page if your claim requires supporting records. You will be asked for your Claim ID and email address.

Accepted file types are PDF, TIF, PNG, and JPG. Each file must be more than 1 byte, no more than 10MB, and the file name must stay within 100 characters using only letters, numbers, dashes, and underscores.

Documents cannot be password protected. The state also asks users to crop images to the document itself and trim away extra white background from scanners.

Some claims require original documents and cannot be completed through the upload page. If you do not yet have a claim form, your Search Request number can be used as the Claim ID for upload.

Forms and other claim options

The forms and resources page covers additional paths. Texas does not provide a blank claim form. To begin a standard claim, search the name and select the properties you want to claim.

If you cannot locate what you need, or you do not want to use the search page, the state provides a Search Request Form through the forms area. The same page also lists an Affidavit of Heirship for a non-probate heirship claim worth $10,000 or less, plus limited authorization forms for individuals and businesses handling claim work for someone else.

Payment method: the Texas unclaimed property site says payments are issued by physical check through standard USPS mail, not by direct deposit or wire transfer.

Common questions

What should I enter when I search for unclaimed property in Texas?

Start with the owner’s last or business name and first name when applicable. If you get too many results, add a city. If you received an owner notice, enter the Property ID in the search page.

What if I do not find the property I expected?

Run another search using a nickname, a common misspelling, a maiden name, or another name the property may have been reported under. The results page shows exact matches first and then similar-name results. If you still need another path, review the forms area for the Search Request Form.

How do I check the status of a Texas unclaimed property claim?

Go to the claim status search page and enter your Claim ID. That number is also on the claim receipt sent to your email address. If you no longer have it, contact the Unclaimed Property Division at unclaimed.property@cpa.texas.gov or (800) 321-2274.

Can I upload all claim documents online?

Not always. The upload page accepts PDF, TIF, PNG, and JPG files, but some claims require original documents and cannot be uploaded through the website. Check your claim form first, then use the upload page only if your claim allows online submission.

Does Texas charge a fee to claim unclaimed property?

No. The Texas unclaimed property FAQ says the state does not charge for this service. You can work directly with the state rather than signing a contract with a private company.
