Payment deadlines and penalties
Tax bills are mailed in late October or early November and are due upon receipt. January 31 is the last day to pay without penalty or interest. Taxes become delinquent on February 1. If January 31 falls on a weekend, payment is timely on the next business day, and mailed payments must be postmarked by January 31 or earlier.
| Month | Penalty | Interest | Total added |
|---|---|---|---|
| February | 6% | 1% | 7% |
| March | 7% | 2% | 9% |
| April | 8% | 3% | 11% |
| May | 9% | 4% | 13% |
| June | 10% | 5% | 15% |
| July | 12% | 6% | 18% |
Important: unpaid business personal property and mobile home accounts add a 20% attorney fee on April 1, and unpaid real property accounts add a 20% attorney fee on July 1.
Payment methods and installment options
In person, the Tax Office accepts cash, check, money order, cashier checks, Discover, Visa, and Mastercard. Certified payments made online or by phone accept E-Check, Discover, Visa, and Mastercard. E-Check payments cost $1.50, and credit card payments carry a convenience fee of up to 2.15% charged by the vendor as Certified Payments.
Owners with a residence homestead and an Over 65 Exemption or Disability Exemption may pay in four equal installments due January 31, March 31, May 31, and July 31. Mark the coupon as Quarter Payment. Partial payments are accepted, but any remaining balance not paid by January 31 starts to accrue penalty and interest.
Reminder: anyone can pay property taxes, but making a payment does not transfer ownership.
Exemptions, estimates, and tax rates
Grayson Central Appraisal District handles exemptions, ownership questions, address corrections, informal meetings, and appraisal protests. You can review exemption details for homestead and other qualifying categories, including disabled veteran exemptions.
For planning, you can estimate a tax bill, view current and historical tax rates, and review local hearing and rate details. For a broader explanation of appraisals, tax rates, and collection, you can also see the property tax process.
Property owners who qualify for tax deferral options, including some age 65 or older, disabled, and disabled veteran homeowners, should work with the appraisal district on the affidavit and next steps.

Common questions
How do I search if I do not know the account number?
You can search by owner name, owner mailing address, or property location instead of the account number. Owner name searches use the last name first, followed by a space and the first name or first initial. For property location, enter only the street number and street name, without street type or direction.
What if I did not receive a tax statement?
You can print a tax statement from the county website or contact the Tax Office for help. Not receiving a statement does not change the due date, penalty and interest rules, tax lien, or collection process. If the deadline is close, check the account online or call the tax office right away.
Who handles ownership, address, or exemption questions?
Grayson Central Appraisal District handles ownership questions, address corrections, and exemption filings. Call (903) 893-9673 for the next step, especially if a tax statement shows the wrong owner or mailing address. Use the appraisal district, not the payment office, for those updates.
What should I do if my mortgage company pays my property taxes?
Forward the tax statement to your mortgage company. Most owners with escrowed taxes still receive a statement, but the mortgage company handles payment from the escrow account. If you are unsure whether the bill has been paid, confirm with your lender before the January 31 deadline.
Can I split or delay payments on a homestead?
Some owners with a residence homestead and an Over 65 Exemption or Disability Exemption may use quarter payments due January 31, March 31, May 31, and July 31. Some deferral options are also available through Grayson Central Appraisal District for qualifying homeowners. If you need either option, contact the appraisal district before missing a deadline.
